Craigslist, as well as other websites that post real estate, can be great resources for finding homes for rent in your area, but unfortunately, housing rental scams are sometimes advertised on these sites. Follow these steps to recognize scams when searching for a rental properties:
You've heard it a million times, but the expression "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is" definitely applies to rental houses and townhomes for rent listed on Craigslist. If you find a three-bedroom rental property listed for $1,000 when other comparable rental houses in your area go for much more, be aware that it could be a scam.
If you see a rental home that you like on Craigslist, but you think it might be a scam, ask for more details about the property. Contact the owner by phone or via email using the "reply to" link at the top of the listing.
If you receive a reply email or phone call from the person claiming to be the owner, and they say they're living in another country and need someone to rent the home while they're gone, this is most likely a scam. These scam emails usually have poor spelling and grammar, and the "owner" will probably ask you to respond with information about yourself. Do not reply to these emails.
Never wire money or send checks to anyone that you haven't met who claims to be the property owner or rental property manager. Only deal with people that are local and you can meet with in person.
IF YOU HAVE REQUESTED TO JOIN THE COTM FACEBOOK PAGE AND HAVE NOT BEEN ACCEPTED IN SEVERAL DAYS OR YOUR REQUEST WAS "IGNORED" IT IS BECAUSE THE ADMINISTRATOR IS WAITING FOR VERIFICATION FROM YOU THAT YOU ARE A COASTIE. CONTACT COTM ASAP VIA EMAIL OR FB MESSAGE & PROVIDE YOUR CG STATUS!

" I appreciate what COTM has helped us accomplish. After putting our home up for rent through here, plenty of emails started coming in. To our advantage, we were able to rent our home out for a lot less due to refinancing and upon emailing Wendy about the changes, the new information was udpated immediately! We really appreciate the free services and information COTM provided for us and we have found wonderful tenants who just love our home as much as we do! I honestly think we would have had a really hard time trying to find trustworthy tenants had we not put our home on COTM. It's nice to know that this website handles our wants and needs with just a few simple clicks! "

ALL HOMES POSTED PRESENTLY SHOULD HAVE AN ACTIVE STATUS. PER 2014 COTM RULES, POSTED HOMES WILL BE DELETED AFTER 4 MONTHS UNLESS THE COTM ADMINISTRATOR IS NOTIFIED PRIOR TO EXPIRATION.
"I'm an active duty Coastie stationed in Massachusetts and when our renters were getting ready to move out of our home in Astoria, OR I had a hard time trying to find new renters on my own. Within two weeks of posting the Astoria house on the Coasties on the Move website, we had already found new renters committed to the house. Transfer season is always stressful, but the services provided by this website make finding (and selling or renting) a home much easier. Thanks for making transfer season a little less stressful this year!"

You may have heard that the rental housing market’s tight on Kodiak Island but there’s no scarcity of open space. Sounds like an ideal climate for a tiny home, right? Well, as Chief Big Bear said to the Lone Ranger, “Eh, not so much.”
Kodiak does have some mobile home parks and a couple of places where travel trailers/RVs may park year round, but these places may be full or not allow tiny homes. And while there’s a lot of open space in Kodiak, buildable land available for purchase is scarce. If you are thinking of buying land to park your house, the structure will need to conform to the Kodiak Island Borough’s building specifications. As your friends in Kodiak, we urge you to talk directly to Jack Maker (retired Coast Guard) who is the borough’s code enforcement officer and also Ted Hansen, the Building Department contact, before you tumble into Kodiak with your tiny home. Jack Maker: (907) 486-9364; Ted Hansen: (907)
